About

I have been lucky, as Robert Frost once put it, to “unite my avocation and my vocation.”
Over the years I have held nearly every job in the magazine industry, from freelance reporter to editor-in-chief, from ad sales rep to group publisher. As a contributor to numerous local, regional, and national magazines, I have covered a wide array of topics, including politics, crime, music, the environment, science, sports, and culture. My general-interest features, columns, and essays have appeared in Atlanta Magazine, Montana Magazine, Travel & Leisure, Gray’s Sporting Journal, Men’s Journal, American Angler and many others. As an editor, I have held the top masthead position at eight different publications for three different media companies, including Game & Fish Publications, Emmis Communications, and Morris Communications. Most recently, during nearly 14 years with the Morris Sporting Group, I served as editor or editor-in-chief of Saltwater Fly Fishing, American Angler, and Gray’s Sporting Journal. From 2007 through 2017, I also served as either the general manager, group publisher, or editorial director of the group. A lifelong outdoorsman with a passion for fly fishing, hunting, wilderness travel, traditional archery, canoeing, and powder skiing, I have been lucky, as Robert Frost once put it, to “unite my avocation and my vocation.”
There are more than 100,000 published words on this website, covering myriad topics across multiple decades. Many of the stories, columns, and essays are accompanied by videos or additional photos that never appeared in print. So thank you for stopping by, and I hope you enjoy exploring these pages.
